Source of Hire

Source of Hire is a recruitment metric that shows what percentage of successful hires came from each specific recruiting channel, such as LinkedIn, Djinni, Work.ua, employee referrals, the company career site, or social media.

Formula

Source of Hire (%) = Number of hires from a specific source / Total number of hires during the period × 100%

How to Calculate Source of Hire

  • Make sure every candidate who accepts an offer is tagged with their source in your ATS.
  • Group your hires by source for the selected period.
  • Calculate each source’s share of the total number of hires.

Typical Benchmarks

There is no single ideal mix, but a healthy distribution for an IT/B2B company may look like this:

  • Direct sourcing / LinkedIn: 30–40%
  • Employee referral program: 20–30%
  • Job boards / aggregators: 20–25%
  • Organic sources (career site, social media): 10–15%

How to Improve Source of Hire

  • Shift your recruiting budget away from low-converting channels and toward the sources that consistently deliver results.
  • Track not only the number of hires from each source, but also their quality, including the retention rate of candidates hired through each channel.
  • Encourage employees to share job openings through an internal referral or incentive program.
