Questions to assess negotiation and persuasion skills

These questions help assess a candidate’s ability to find compromises, justify their position, consider the interests of the other party, and reach agreements under challenging circumstances.

  • Describe the most difficult negotiation you have had in your career. What was your goal, and what outcome did you achieve?
  • How do you prepare for negotiations if you know that the other party’s position is stronger or more rigid than yours?
  • Recall a situation when you managed to convince colleagues or a client to abandon an ineffective solution in favor of your proposal.
  • What techniques do you use to identify the other party’s hidden needs or true motivations during a conversation?
  • How do you act when negotiations reach an impasse and neither side is willing to make concessions?
  • How do you justify your position if the other party relies solely on emotions rather than facts or figures?
  • Recall a situation when you had to make a forced compromise. How did you determine the limits of acceptable concessions?
  • How do you build trust with a negotiator who is initially skeptical or hostile?
  • Share your experience of negotiating an increase in your own budget, resources, or salary.
  • How do you document agreements after negotiations are completed to avoid ambiguous interpretations in the future?
  • Give an example of when you realized that it was no longer worthwhile to continue negotiations and decided to walk away from the deal.
