Behavioral interview questions: initiative and proactivity

A set of questions designed to identify candidates who don’t wait for instructions but proactively spot opportunities for improvement, suggest ways to optimize processes, and take ownership of driving change.

  • Tell us about a process or policy at your previous company that you took the initiative to revise and improve. What did you change, and what results did it produce?
  • Give an example of when you spotted a problem or bottleneck that management wasn’t aware of yet. What did you do?
  • Tell us about a time when you took ownership of a task or project and stepped into a leadership role without being formally appointed as the lead.
  • Tell us about a time when you suggested and implemented a new tool or technology as part of your team’s workflow.
  • Describe a situation when you went above and beyond what was expected of you based on your job description or the scope of the task.
  • Tell us about a time when you independently found and brought in a new client, partner, or contractor for the company.
  • Describe a situation when you organized training or a knowledge-sharing session for your colleagues without being asked to do so.
  • Tell us about a time when your proactive initiative helped the company save money or make better use of its resources.
  • Describe a time when you took on a challenging project that other team members had turned down.
  • Tell us about a time when you identified a knowledge gap that could have affected a project and quickly taught yourself what you needed to know.
  • Tell us about a time when you advocated for an innovation that management was initially hesitant to adopt.
